Creole Moon the Betrayal by S.T. Holmes

The first thing I noticed about this book is that it is really beautiful. I know this is totally a “judge its book by its cover” kind of thing, but seriously, I love it. I liked this book a lot, actually. The author's writing is always well-crafted, easy to read, and richly detailed without being boring or overambitious.

Creole Moon The Betrayal is a book that takes place around the eighteen hundreds, set in New Orleans, this book deals with the mysterious voodoo that the region is known for.  It centers around the life of Sgt. George Francis Genois who is an officer in the Confederate army. It follows George and his realizations that there is more to life than what he originally thought. Unlike his brother who is caught up in marrying, and having children, something he is absolutely not interested in. Everything changes when it appears, he has fallen in love with a woman, under her influence of a spell, against his free will. And as if it isn't enough to make his life miserable, the woman she's in love with is in trouble and he needs to save her, and he goes to the wrong place for help. Instead of getting the help he so desperately needs, another powerful spell is cast on him by the Sorcerer, Mamuska.

I can tell that this book is one that's going to stay with me for a long time. I liked the basic bones of this story. It's definitely one of my favorites this year. I enjoyed all the magic this book incorporated. It was mysterious, and not completely stereotypical of books in this genre. It is really allegorical, and I thought it was very imaginative. The characters were real to me -- they had flaws and failures, they grew, and they had a purpose. The story, while definitely light reading, was exactly what my brain needed. Additionally, the lighter fare of the storyline allowed me to develop a better connection with the characters, because I wasn't so consumed with trying to figure out a convoluted storyline. I really enjoy this book and I cannot wait to read the next of this series!
