This story takes place in a fantasy realm. Tomas knows no other humans but has been brought up by the creatures and trees of Terra. An innocent and fast approaching his coming of age, he encounters a force that seeks his mind and together with an Emerald Drae, A Spider, Megalong and an Oak. It was the beginning of his journey en route to claiming his right to exist as a human and a power to be reckoned with.
From the beginning, I was taken captived by the range of characters. A few were appealing, some peculiar, and some hostile. Balch has a realism about it that allows the reader to feel as though they are engaging in the story as it progresses. The whole story is both straightforward and complex at the same time. It is simple in a way that the story is enjoyable from the vantage point of a young reader, yet it has tinge of meaning that any adult reader would have fun discovering. There is so much in it than just an ordinary book. I am pretty sure I'll be reading it again.
It was a fun and fast read. It didn’t take me long to read it at all. It also had the added advantage of having the type of voice where I could feel like I was in this person’s head. This is always a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it’s fun to be so much of a part of a character that you understand them that much. You feel like you hear their thoughts, their problems are your problems, and it’s easy to lose oneself in the story.
This is absolutely a must read! I've always thought there was more to this world than meets the eye and this book brought me that. Reading this book took me to a whole new world where anything could be possible, and where we're not limited by our trepidations and discernments. The ingenuity and thrill, and the depths of emotions and understanding that Tomas and his friends brings to live is truly astounding. Everyone should definitely check out this book.
