Sun-Hae Kim's Among Hibiscus and Roses narrates the challenges of being an army nurse but at the same time delineates the fun times she had with her fellow nurses. She recounts the tribulations and rewards of being a nurse for over thirty-seven years, in both South Korea and the United States. When she immigrated, she learned to live with new cultures, languages, and social life. She also encountered numerous new and interesting people. Throughout her passage, she was filled with awe and enthusiasm for her new adventures in life. She wishes that her tale encourages younger generation Koreans in the U.S. who dream of becoming a nurse.
She is an honest, hard-working woman, and one who I feel privileged to have learned from in this book. This book is not just for nurses. Anyone who loves memoirs or reading about other people's journeys would especially enjoy it. It really has something for everyone.
